The alarm went off at 7am this morning. Had to get up early to peel the bananas and make the special batter! Pisang Goreng on my mind, an Indo food special (banana fritters) and of course Oliebollen, a true traditional Dutch food I grew up with. Oliebollen (literally oil balls) are a variety of dumplings with or without currents, deep fried in hot oil. It’s worth stinking up the house, deep frying my favorite fritters and balls. I remember when growing up, I started eating these early in the morning on the last day of the year, stuffing myself throughout the day until I became an ‘oliebol’ myself and rolled into the new year. ‘Oliebollen’ are usually eaten on New Year’s Eve and at Dutch fairs. Pisang goreng can be eaten at any occasion. On New Year’s Eve we serve it with powder sugar and some cinnamon. It can also be served with melted ‘gulah djawa’ (palm sugar). YUM!
Hope you all are having a fine New Year’s Eve and a good start of the New Year! I wish you all a fantabulous 2011. Hope to see you back on Cooking With Keasberry. It’s going to be a great new year of sharing recipes, food and fun with family and friends!
