In addition to this list of Indonesian restaurants and eateries in the Netherlands, I have asked my friend Pepy Nasution, an Indonesian-born Canadian who resides in the Netherlands now, to give her ‘subjective’ feedback on some of the restaurants she visited and the food she tried. As my grandmother used to say: “We can’t argue about taste, but we can talk about it.”
The recommendations and short reviews below are based on Pepy’s taste buds.
Amsterdam:
- Paon Bali – regional Bali food
- Aries Noodle – Chinese Indonesian Noodle type of noodle in Jakarta
- Warung Barokah – the taste is closer to home for me as a person who was born in East Java
- Koeah
Den Haag
- Lapek Jo – Minang food aka Padang food
- Praboemoelih – choose only their South Sumatran menu such as celimpungan, pempek, tekwan, laksan, pindang iga as they’re from Prabumulih, South Sumatra
- Trio Eethuis – they’re also from South Sumatra. I enjoy their noodle dish too similar to Aries Noodle but it’s on the sweeter side.
- Bumbu Jawa – this is the second generation from East Java. Their lontong cap gomeh is pretty close to East Java Lontong Cap Gomeh minus telur petis lading. And their sate kambing is pretty damn close to my late mom sate kambing.
- Kopi Kopi – Their siomay.
- Warung Indonesia in Haagse Markt for the Bakso too
Amersfoort:
- Jiwa Jawa – the best bakso in the Netherlands
Breukelen:
- Warung Anisah – Minang food that is more flavourful not just spicy like Lapek Jo. The rendang from Warung Anisah is super similar to my rendang tastewise.
Zaandam:
- Toko Kalimantan : their nasi bakar is a real deal. But I also enjoy their Soto Banjar.
